Hologram Kit FAQ

How quickly can I set up the kit and make my holograms?

The kit can be put together and you can be finished with your first hologram in about an hour.

What kinds of chemicals will I need to develop the hologram?

None.  The Litiholo Hologram Kit has no need for chemical development, as the 2.0 ”Instant Hologram” film develops itself as it’s exposed.

How long do I need to wait after the exposure before I can see my hologram?

No wait time needed.  Your hologram will be visible immediately after removing the object from the laser light.

Is there a need for any special lab equipment to make holograms at home?

Professionals work with large lasers and vibration isolation tables, but the Litiholo Hologram Kit is designed to maximize the performance of both the laser and film so you can create holograms instantly at home or in a classroom.  All that’s needed is a sturdy surface to expose your hologram and a fairly dark room.

How long do I need to expose my hologram for?

For the Hologram Kit, the typical exposure time is about five minutes.

Why do I need to warm up the laser diode for five minutes before making an exposure?

Warming up the laser is important in stabilizing the output of the light emitted from the laser.  Just like a refrigerator isn’t instantly chilled when first plugged in, the laser’s light needs a little time to reach its peak, stable performance level.

Can I use my own laser?

You’ll need a laser that is the right wavelength (color) for exposing the film, so red-sensitive hologram film would need to be exposed by a red laser.  The laser also has to create interference fringes, typically meaning it is single-mode and single-frequency.  The laser must be stable in temperature, not shifting up and down which changes the interference patterns.

How much light is allowed in the dark room?

The 2.0 “Instant Hologram” film isn’t nearly as sensitive as regular photography negatives, so your dark room doesn’t have to be pitch black.  It’s recommended to go as dark as you can for better hologram exposure, but we don’t want anybody tripping on things.  If you can’t see properly in the dark room, crack a door or grab a small LED light to navigate.  In fact, we’ve made holograms in regular room light with great success.

Can I use the Hologram Kit to teach my students?

The Litiholo Hologram Kit has been used to teach students all over the world, from middle school to college; hologram kits are even being used by Harvard University.  Making holograms is a great way to excite and engage students while teaching the concepts of physics, optics, etc.

How do I view the hologram after making it?

Viewing the hologram is simple.  Once you’ve exposed your film for five minutes, remove the object from the holographic plate holder and look through the holographic plate like a window to where the object used to be.

Can my child make holograms at home?

Children can make their own holograms at home with the Hologram Kit, and there are no harsh chemicals to worry about or dilute.  Kids are amazed by holograms and eyes light up when they reach around and realize that the object isn’t actually there.

Does the Litiholo Hologram Kit include everything I need to make holograms?

The Hologram Kit is designed to be an all-inclusive hologram lab; the only thing you need to add is a darkened room and sturdy table or surface on which to expose your holograms.

How easy is it to make holograms with the hologram kit?

Very easy.  With the new 2.0 “Instant Hologram” film, exposure time is down to around five minutes total and with no development process afterwards, there’s no clean-up or waiting on your hologram to show up!

How long does the film last in storage?

The film can last over a year in storage.  The biggest degradation to the film’s quality is exposure to light, so as long as it’s kept in a dark place and not thrown around, the film should be preserved.  See the film specifications page for more details on proper storage.

How long will my finished hologram last?

Your holograms should last for a very long time.  After the 2.0 “Instant Hologram” film is exposed, it is essentially an inert plastic.

What sizes does the film come in?

The film comes laminated on 2” by 3” glass plates that are designed to fit into the holographic plate holder.  Unexposed film has a noticeably blue tint and slowly turns clearer as it’s exposed.  We hope to have additional sizes in the near future.
